Where California's Christian Camps Are Located

California is a large state with distinct camp geography. The highest concentration of quality Christian camps sits in two areas: the Sierra Nevada foothills and Kings Canyon region in Central California, and the San Bernardino and Palomar Mountain ranges in Southern California. The Santa Cruz Mountains serve Bay Area families well, and Northern California has scattered options near Lake Tahoe and Shasta.

Sierra Nevada / Sequoia Foothills

Hume, Badger, Shaver Lake, Dunlap · 10–12 camps

The highest concentration of quality camps in the state. Hume Lake's Kings Canyon setting and Hartland's 1,000+ acre foothills property are in this corridor. Roughly 3–4 hours from LA and 3–5 hours from the Bay Area — a real commitment, but the scenery earns it.

Best for: Best overall setting; serious mountain experience

Southern CA Mountains

Forest Falls, Big Bear area, Palomar Mountain · 8–10 camps

The most accessible region for the 20+ million people in the LA–San Diego–Orange County metro. Forest Home's San Bernardino Mountains location is 1.5–2 hours from most SoCal addresses. Palomar Mountain serves San Diego County. Summer temperatures 20–30°F cooler than the valley below.

Best for: SoCal families; shorter drive; Forest Home

Central Coast / Santa Cruz Mountains

Mount Hermon, Ben Lomond, Scotts Valley · 3–5 camps

Mount Hermon dominates this region — a 440-acre redwood camp that's been operating for over a century. About 1 hour from San Jose, 90 minutes from San Francisco. The redwood setting is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Christian camping.

Best for: Bay Area families; Mount Hermon specifically

Northern California

Shasta area, Gold Country, Lake Tahoe region · 5–8 camps

Fewer options but some excellent smaller camps scattered through the Sierras near Tahoe and around Redding. Generally less name recognition than the Central CA camps, but often more affordable and with a more intimate feel.

Best for: Northern CA families; smaller community camps

What California Christian Camps Cost in 2026

California camps are the most expensive in the country — by a meaningful margin. This reflects California's high property values, operating costs, staff wages, and insurance costs. Budget accordingly and ask about scholarships early — most major camps have them.

Budget
$450–600/week
Smaller denominational camps, especially in Northern CA or the Sierra foothills. Often more intimate settings with simpler facilities.
Mid-range
$600–900/week
The standard range for California's established Christian camps. Hume Lake, Hartland, Forest Home, and Palomar all fall here. Full programming and solid facilities.
Premium
$900–1,100+/week
Mount Hermon and specialized sessions at Forest Home. Top-tier facilities, smaller groups, specialty programming (arts, leadership, sports). Some multi-week programs exceed $2,000.
A note on scholarships

Given California's high prices, most quality camps have substantial scholarship programs. Forest Home, Hume Lake, and Mount Hermon all have dedicated scholarship funds. Ask specifically — don't assume it's not available because the camp looks expensive. Many families who would never qualify for need-based aid elsewhere receive partial scholarships at California camps simply because the full price is so high.

Tips for Choosing a California Christian Camp

1
Register in November — not January
California's top camps — Forest Home, Hume Lake, and Mount Hermon — open registration in November. The best sessions are full by February or March. This is not an exaggeration: popular one-week sessions at Hume Lake and Forest Home sell out within days of opening. If you miss the window, you're on a waitlist.
2
Match the region to your drive tolerance
Southern California families should look at Forest Home (San Bernardino Mountains) and Palomar first — both are 1.5–2.5 hours from most SoCal addresses. Bay Area families should start with Mount Hermon (1 hour from San Jose). Central Valley families are closest to Hume Lake and Hartland. Don't make a 5-hour drive your first choice when a 2-hour option exists.
3
Ask about the scholarship process before assuming camp is unaffordable
California camps have large scholarship funds specifically because they know their prices are high. The scholarship application process is usually simple and turnaround is quick. Don't let the sticker price end the conversation before it starts.
4
Understand what 'non-denominational' means for each camp
California's dominant camps are all labeled non-denominational, but that word covers a wide theological range. Forest Home and Hume Lake are solidly evangelical, conservative Protestant, and Bible-centered. Mount Hermon serves a slightly broader progressive evangelical community. Read each camp's statement of faith carefully if your family has specific expectations.
5
Consider altitude and health at Sierra Nevada camps
Hume Lake sits at 5,300 ft. Hartland and other Sierra foothills camps are at 2,000–4,000 ft. Children with asthma, heart conditions, or altitude sensitivity should consult a doctor before attending. Most kids adapt fine, but it's worth knowing in advance.
6
Look for Young Life if your child is in high school
Young Life runs some of the highest-quality high school programs in the state, including Woodleaf in the Northern Sierras. The programming is specifically designed for teens and the community-building aspect is unusually strong. Worth exploring even if your family isn't already connected to a Young Life chapter.
